“What’s happening to him?” Loch asked while they tried to help Creed as he thrashed around the floor.
He’d been the one to find him first, quickly calling for Tar when he found Creed having trouble breathing, but it didn’t seem to be a purely physical problem.
“It’s a panic attack,” Tar said as he wiped Creed’s head with a warm washcloth. “He’s burning up.”
“Seems more like a nightmare.”
“It is.” Tar looked as concerned as Loch felt, especially because Creed had begun to thrash between them. All they could do was talk to him, touch him, assure him that he was okay.
And finally, after what seemed like forever, Creed stopped struggling, and even though he was still panting, he was pulling in easier breaths. His expression relaxed slightly.
When he opened his eyes, it took him a few moments to register where he was, and he looked between Loch and Tar with slight suspicion before realizing what had happened. He closed his eyes and murmured, “Fuck. Fuck.”
Tar looked over at Loch and smiled, relief evident in his face, and Loch’s gut tightened at how handsome Tar was. He reached out and put a hand on his friend’s cheek and Tar frowned, but didn’t pull away.
“I’m sorry,” was all Loch said, to both men. He took his hand away and Creed opened his eyes.
“Yeah, me too.” Creed groaned and went to sit up. Tar helped him so his back was against the couch.
“Does that happen a lot?” Tar asked him.
“Not really, no. But it’s not the first time.” Creed sighed. “It always sucks.”
“Thinking about Snow?” Loch asked hesitantly.
“Wasn’t about Snow.” Creed took a long slug out of the water bottle Tar handed him. “Before that. With…those people.”
Loch assumed he was talking about his parents—or the foster family. Jasper hadn’t been able to verify exactly which one they were, but Loch suspected they were the latter. That Creed had been trafficked to them, and that they’d been paid by Snow to turn him over. “Do you remember…anything?”
“Some. None of it good.”
“Yeah, same here.” Tar sat shoulder to shoulder with Creed. “I guess we never talked about how we got to Snow.”
“Does it really matter?” Creed asked. “I mean, if life was good before it for any of the guys there, I’d be shocked.”
“Mine was,” Loch heard himself say. “Until my parents died.”
Creed would assume that Loch somehow ended up at Snow’s camps after that—and he had, but definitely not in the way Creed thought. But Loch wouldn’t clarify it. Admitting the reality to Creed now, no matter how shitty it was, would be the stupidest thing ever because it could trigger Creed, worse than he already was.
Even with the small admission, Creed’s eyes looked haunted. “Yeah, that’s worse. At least I went from shitty to shitty. If things had been good beforehand, I’m not sure I could’ve survived.”
Tar remained silent, his stare that of the thousand-yard variety, and Loch reached over and touched his arm. “You all right?”
“I don’t like talking about this shit—at all.” His voice was tight.
